While many varieties of hot pepper are grown in the region, most are referred to as Calabrian peperoncino, and used in regional dishes. Like all capsicum plants, Calabrian peppers require hot weather to flourish and develop the oils that give them their spiciness.
- Whole Dried Calabrian Chillies (20g) Fiery red in colour and taste, these top quality Calabrian ‘peperoncino’ have been left to dry on the vine in the Mediterranean sunshine to give a more potent heat and fruitier taste. Calabria is one of Europe’s main producers and consumers of peperoncino which is considered ‘medium hot’ on the Scoville Scale which measures the heat of chillies worldwide.
- La Bumba (212ml) Our super spicy spread ‘La Bumba’ is a combination of Calabrian chilli pepper (Peperoncino) in oil and finely chopped vegetables. This product is nicely addictive and useful in many tomato based sauces, on a pizza or spread on bruschetta if you dare! Add to mayonnaise for a punchy accompaniment to cooked meats or even a dip for crudités.
